Fertilizacion In Vitro

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): The injection of a spermatozoid in each ovum, awaiting fertilization for its subsequent transfer into the uterine cavity. THIS PROCEDURE IS ONLY DONE IN PANAMA.

INDICATIONS

Tube Damage (obstructed tubes), Male factor (poor sperm), Endometriosis grades II, III, IV, Polycystic ovaries, Cervical Factor, Immunological Factor, Unexplained Infertility, cases of ova donors.

STEPS OR STAGES

1. Alignment, ovarian induction and follicular follow-up: The use of pills to align or move the menstrual cycle have the bleeding coincide with the first day of the month, after this an ultrasound must be made on the second day of the new cycle in order to initiate the induction of the of ovarian follicle growth with daily injections for 10 days in tandem with ultrasounds on days 7 and 10 of the new period to measure the follicles and adjust the dosage of medication and determine the moment of follicular aspiration. This entire process takes approximately 30 days; Costa Rican patients can have this step taken care of in our San Jose clinic.

2. Follicular Aspiration: The ovaries are vacuumed through a needle with vaginal ultrasound guide under anesthetic sedation. 75 minutes prior to the time agreed for the aspiration the husband must begin to take semen sample by way of masturbation and bring it at room temperature. In cases where epididymal and testicular aspiration are necessary, aspiration will take place after the wife's.

3. Embryonic Transfer: It is the placement of the embryos within the uterus guided by an abdominal ultrasound. It is routinely done on the 3 rd day after aspiration; special cases can be delayed until the 5 th day (blastocyst). The number of embryos transferred will be decided by the couple based on our recommendations. After the transfer, patients may return to their country of origin if they so wish it. The average duration of Costa Rican patients' stay in is of only 6 days and up to 15 days for those coming from other countries.

4. Waiting Period: It is the 12 days following the above procedures, after which a blood pregnancy test must be administered.
