INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination is the selection of the most fertile spermatozoa and their subsequent introduction into the uterus by way of a canula (tube) through the cervical channel.

REQUISITES AND CANDIDATES
Every couple that possess permeable fallopian tubes with healthy fimbriae, proper ovumrian response to the inductive drugs and a sperm count of at least 5 million of motile sperm are eligible. This procedure is useful when the following conditions are present: Mild Oligospermia (low sperm count), Mild Endometriosis, Unexplainable Infertility, Cervical Factor or Immunological Factor.

HOW IS THE SPERM FOR INSEMINATION SELECTED?
By means of chemical substances we are able to filter the semen, achieving high concentrations of healthy spermatozoa. A second chemical is administered to flush and enhance the spermatozoa´s mobility in order to increase the chances of producing a pregnancy.

WHAT WILL I GO THROUGH DURING THE PROCESS?

  1. Induction: the use of medicine to stimulate the growth of the ovaries and the production of follicles as well as thicken the inner layer of the uterus (endometrium).

  2. Follicular Follow-up: the performance of ultrasound scans on days 2, 7 and 10 of the period in order to measure the ovarian follicles, adjust the dosages and determine the date and time of insemination.

  3. Collection and Processing of the sperm sample: the collection of the sperm sample and subsequent processing, concentrating the most fertile spermatozoa. At this point the male partner must have, ideally, 3 to 5 days of sexual abstinence.

  4. Insemination: the placement of the processed semen into the uterus.

  5. Waiting Period: the 14 days following the procedure. On the 14th day a pregnancy test (blood test) is to be performed.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE WITH THIS KIND OF PROCEDURE?
We have a success rate of 20 to 25% in every attempt with this procedure.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF, AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS, PREGNANCY IS NOT ACHIEVED?
After 4 unsuccessful attempts we must resort to more invasive methods. These methods require anaesthesia in order to procure the ovum, such as Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) which can be performed in Costa Rica and In Vitro Fertilization which can be performed in Panama.

Prices

  • Per Attempt: $100 (facilities) + $100 (medical staff) = $200
