INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination is the selection of the most fertile spermatozoa and their subsequent introduction into the uterus by way of a canula (tube) through the cervical channel.

REQUISITES:
1. Woman under 42 years of age.
2. Permeable uterine tubes.
3. Adecuate ovarian response to inductive medications.
4. Male with at least 5 million mobile sperm cells on the sperm count.

HOW IS THE SPERM FOR INSEMINATION SELECTED?
By means of chemical substances we are able to filter the semen, achieving high concentrations of healthy spermatozoa. A second chemical is administered to flush and enhance the spermatozoa´s mobility in order to increase the chances of producing a pregnancy.

WHAT WILL I GO THROUGH DURING THE PROCESS?

1. Induction: the use of medicine to stimulate the growth of follicles in the ovaries as well as thicken the inner layer of the uterus (endometrium).

2. Follicular Follow-up: the performance of ultrasound scans on days 2 or 3, and 9 or 10 of the period in order to measure the ovarian follicles, adjust the dosages and determine the date and time of insemination. These are only two appointments.

3. Collection and Processing of the sperm sample: the collection of the sperm sample and subsequent processing. At this point the male partner must have, ideally, 3 to 5 days of sexual abstinence. Our new Double Gradient technique (we are the only ones able to offer it in Costa Rica and Panama) allows us to offer the best technology to process the sample and thus obtain excellent results.

4. Insemination: the placement of the processed semen inside the uterine cavity through a special catheter under ultrasonographic guide.

5. Waiting Period: the 14 days following the procedure after which a pregnancy test (blood test) is to be performed.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE WHEN EMPLOYING THESE TECHNIQUES?
At Fecundar Costa Rica we have a success rate between 20% to 35% depending on the patient's age. Since this is the process that we perform most often, in the last 10 years we have managed to perfect the technique and offer a high quality Intrauterine Insemination and efficiency where 75% of our patients achieve pregnancy within the first 3 attempts.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IS AFTER ATTEMPTING 3 CYCLES PREGNANCY HAS NOT BEEN ACHIEVED?
After 3 attempts we must shift to more invasive methods which require the use of anesthesia in order to obtain the ova, such as Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer (GIFT) which we administer in Costa Rica and In Vitro Fertilization which we administer in Panama.

Prices:
Each attempt: $200 (lab) + $150 (medical honoraries) = $350 per attempt.

Special cases (if required):
Sperm Donor $350 US per sample (donor studies, sample freezing and unfreezing).
