Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT)
The transfer of the spermatozoa and the ovum, together, into the fallopian tubes so that fertilization may take place. It is a method of Assisted Reproduction that can be performed in Costa Rica. It is useful for patients meeting the following criteria: Failed Inseminations, Unexplained Infertility, Male Factor (poor sperm), Endometriosis, Cervical Factor, Immunological Factor, Hormonal Disturbances and Eligible Candidates for egg donor treatments.
REQUISITES:
- The female must have at least one permeable fallopian tube.
- The male must have a sperm count of at least 2 million.
WHAT WILL I GO THROUGH DURING THE PROCESS?
- Induction: the use of medicine to stimulate the growth of the ovaries and the production of follicles.
- Follicular Follow-up: the performance of ultrasound scans on days 2, 7 and 10 of the period in order to measure the ovarian follicles, adjust the dosages and determine the date of aspiration.
- Collection and Processing of the sperm sample: the collection of the sperm sample and subsequent processing, concentrating the most fertile spermatozoa. At this point the male partner must have, ideally, 3 to 5 days of sexual abstinence. Sperm sample collection must be administered 1 hour prior to Follicular Aspiration.
- Follicular Aspiration: the ovaries are vacuumed with a needle, guided by way of ultrasound. This procedure is performed on the patient while under the effects of anaesthesia.
- Gamete Transfer: the placement of the gametes (ovum and spermatozoa) within the fallopian tubes by way of a catheter (tube) by means of a laparoscopy. The procedure is performed on the patient while under the effects of anaesthesia.
- Waiting Period: the 14 days following the procedure during which the patient must use the progesterone as indicated by the doctor. On the 14th day a pregnancy test (blood test) is to be performed.
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE WITH THIS KIND OF PROCEDURE?
With this procedure pregnancy rate is 33% (1 out of every 3 attempts).
This proceedure will be temporarily inactive in 2008.
